La Selección Colombia Masculina celebró una nueva victoria ante República del Congo este martes 23 de junio.

Con seis puntos en dos partidos, La Sele se apunta en la siguiente ronda habitando la primera casilla del Grupo K. Ahora, los dirigidos por Néstor Lorenzo deberán enfrentar a la Selección de Portugal, el sábado 27 de junio a las 6:30 de la tarde (hora COL).

Posterior al encuentro, el director técnico de la Selección Colombia ofreció la conferencia de prensa habitual a los medios de comunicación presentes en el Estadio Akron de Guadalajara, México:

Pregunta 1: en atención al desempeño del equipo ante un rival tan fuerte físicamente como el conjunto africano 

“Nos vino bien, de pronto, haber jugado con equipos que tuvieran un esquema defensivo muy sólido y que cerraran los espacios, porque tuvimos que usar distintos canales de llegada, en diferentes carriles, buscar espacios y abrir caminos. Eso el equipo lo fue incorporando y por eso ha mejorado en su juego. 

Yo también vi que llegamos por todos lados prácticamente, así que es una buena sensación la que nos da”.

Pregunta 2: sobre los cambios realizados en el partido 

“Jugaron un gran partido, hicieron el gasto cuando el duelo estaba cerrado y donde se estaba armando. James hizo un gran partido, creo que lo cambié para refrescar, porque ‘Juanfer’ puede tener más o menos la misma función que él, pero lo hizo muy bien. 

Luis Suárez también me parece que buscó, que fue el que fijó a dos de los centrales para generar espacios en otros lados y peleó todas. Jugó mucho de espaldas, a pesar de ello, me gustó mucho lo que hizo. Vale mencionar que estaba un poco sentido del hombro”. 

Pregunta 3: consulta sobre las sensaciones luego del partido 

“Lo que pasa es que ya vieron cómo son los partidos, son muy parejos. Uno aspira a ganar siempre. Siempre nosotros pensamos en ganar, nada más, pero en cada compromiso tiene situaciones que hacen que pueda variar el resultado. 

Gracias a Dios tenemos el puntaje ideal, gracias a Dios hemos crecido en el rendimiento del equipo. Pienso que estuvo muy bien planteado, corriendo riesgos otra vez, como la vez pasada.

Estoy seguro de que podríamos haber sacado una diferencia más grande, pero bueno, se dio que hasta el final, hasta el último centro, uno está nervioso, así se haya hecho un gran partido. 

Lo importante es mejorar el rendimiento de todos, del individual y del colectivo. Creo que hoy sí hizo un gran juego”.

Pregunta 4: acerca del desempeño de Juan Fernando Quintero 

“Juan Fernando Quintero es un jugador que es muy preciso en esa parte del campo, con pases filtrados, tiros libres y pelota parada. Creo que hizo su trabajo y que lo hizo muy bien. El gol viene también de un pase de él, Córdoba la pelea en el área y aparece Daniel Muñoz desde atrás.

Tanto él como James son dos excelentes jugadores en ese tercio del campo para filtrar pases o para poner pelotas de gol. 

Así que el impacto fue bueno, porque refrescó al equipo y nos dio desde esa zona precisión en la llegada”. 

Pregunta 5: sobre el siguiente rival 

“Portugal es un equipo más parecido a nosotros, en el sentido que sale a ser protagonista, a tener posesión de balón.

Es distinto a estos que hemos enfrentado. Y bueno, ya veremos cómo planteamos el partido, qué estrategia utilizamos. Pero, va a ser un encuentro de dos equipos que intentan jugar muy bien al fútbol”.

Pregunta 6: acerca de las claves para ganar el partido ante Portugal

“Generalmente cuando quieres demostrar, no te va bien. Uno tiene que aspirar a crecer día a día, a que el equipo incorpore ciertos mecanismos que le hagan bien a su juego. Y esa es la idea siempre de nosotros.

Así que vamos a enfrentar a un gran plantel. También, como tú dices, candidato a ganar el Mundial. Así que bueno, será una prueba muy importante para nosotros.

Por ello, vamos a tratar de tener que usar otras herramientas de las que usamos hoy, de las que usamos el otro día contra Uzbekistán, para poder estar a la altura del rival”.

Pregunta 7: relativo a lo que significa Cristiano como jugador y en la Selección

 “Ah, bueno, Cristiano es un gran jugador, no se lo puede descuidar, porque es de los mejores definidores del mundo. Así que tendremos que tener mucho cuidado en dejarlo solo en situaciones de gol o en situaciones cercanas al arco.

Sin embargo, Portugal es un equipo completo en todo sentido. No es que hay que marcar solo a Cristiano, tienen grandes jugadores en todas sus líneas”. 

Pregunta 8: sobre el aliento de la hinchada 

“Sí, es emocionante. La verdad que tengo que decirle gracias a la gente, porque es impresionante cómo alientan, cómo sigue el equipo, con esa pasión, con esas ganas y con esa ilusión.

Y bueno, con los muchachos, con todos, nos comprometemos a seguir entregando todo por esa camiseta amarilla que llena los estadios con tanta pasión. 

Yo siempre les digo, esto es lo que ustedes han propuesto, lo que ustedes han desatado de alguna manera, y hay que hacerse cargo. 

Así que, Dios quiera que sigamos así”.

Question 1: On the team’s performance against such a physically strong opponent as the African side

«It was beneficial for us to have previously faced teams with very solid defensive structures that closed down spaces, because it forced us to find different attacking routes, use various channels, and look for ways to break through. The team has gradually incorporated those concepts, and that is why our play has improved.

I also felt that we were able to create chances from virtually every area of the pitch, which leaves us with a very positive feeling.»

Question 2: On the substitutions made during the match

«They both played a great game and put in a tremendous effort while the match was still very tight and competitive. James had an excellent performance. I made the substitution mainly to bring fresh legs into the team because Juanfer can perform a very similar role, and he did it very well.

I also thought Luis Suárez worked hard throughout the match. He occupied two central defenders, creating space in other areas, and fought for every ball. He played with his back to goal for much of the game, and despite that, I was very pleased with his performance. It’s also worth mentioning that he was carrying some discomfort in his shoulder.»

Question 3: On his feelings after the match

«As you’ve seen, these matches are very evenly contested. We always aim to win, and winning is always our objective, but every game presents different situations that can influence the final result.

Thankfully, we have achieved the maximum number of points possible so far, and thankfully, the team’s performances have continued to improve. I think the match was very well approached tactically, once again taking calculated risks, just as we did in the previous game.

I’m convinced we could have won by a larger margin, but football is like that. Until the very last cross into the box, you’re still nervous, even when you’ve played a great match.

The important thing is to keep improving both individually and collectively, and I believe today the team delivered an outstanding performance.»

Question 4: On Juan Fernando Quintero’s performance

«Juan Fernando Quintero is a player with tremendous precision in that area of the field. He excels with through balls, free kicks, and set pieces. I think he fulfilled his role very well.

The goal itself also originated from one of his passes. Córdoba battled for the ball inside the box, and Daniel Muñoz arrived from deep to finish the move.

Both Juanfer and James are exceptional players in the final third when it comes to threading passes and creating goal-scoring opportunities. His impact was very positive because he brought fresh energy to the team and gave us greater precision in our attacking play.»

Question 5: On the next opponent

«Portugal is a team that resembles us in many ways. They like to take the initiative, dominate possession, and dictate the game.

They are different from the teams we have faced so far. We will now analyze how to approach the match and determine the best strategy, but it will certainly be a contest between two teams that try to play good football.»

Question 6: On the keys to beating Portugal

«Generally, when your focus is on proving something, things do not always go well. What matters is improving day by day and continuing to incorporate mechanisms that strengthen the team’s style of play. That has always been our philosophy.

We are going to face a fantastic squad and, as you mentioned, one of the favorites to win the World Cup. It will be a very important test for us.

Because of that, we will need to rely on different tools from the ones we used today and against Uzbekistan in order to compete at the level required by such a strong opponent.»

Question 7: On Cristiano Ronaldo and his importance to Portugal

«Cristiano is a world-class player. You cannot afford to lose sight of him because he is one of the best finishers in the world. We will need to be extremely careful not to leave him unmarked in goal-scoring situations or in dangerous areas near the box.

That said, Portugal is a complete team in every sense. It’s not only about marking Cristiano; they have outstanding players in every line of the team.»

Question 8: On the support from the Colombian fans

«It’s truly emotional. I have to thank our supporters because it’s incredible to see the way they back the team, with so much passion, enthusiasm, and hope.

On behalf of the players and the entire group, we are committed to continuing to give everything for this yellow jersey that fills stadiums with such incredible energy.

I always tell the players that this is something they have inspired, something they have helped create, and now we must embrace that responsibility.
